Neues FreeBSD-Buch Buecher, FreeBSD

Juergen Dankoweit hat sich wieder einmal die Arbeit gemacht, und ein aktuelles Buch uber FreeBSD geschrieben. Abgedeckt werden die Releases 7 und 8, auf Release 6 wird an eingegangen.
Die Themen des Buches sind:
- Installation von FreeBSD, PC-BSD,DesktopBSD und Debian GNU/kFreeBSD
- Kernel und Kernelmodule bauen, konfigurieren und aktualisieren
- Software installieren und Ports zusammenstellen
- Benutzer und Gruppen Administrieren
- X Window einrichten
- Arbeiten mit C-Shell, bash und OpenSSH
- LAN und WLAN
- Serverdienste und Firewall installieren
- Desktiovirtualisierung und Jails
Erschienen ist das Buch bei C&L.
Ein weiteres, sehr zu empfehlendes Buch von Juergen Dankoweit ist “Benutzer im Unix-Netz“

Nochmal FreeBSD 8 FreeBSD

Ist zwar nicht mehr ganz so neu, aber ich habe es eben erst gelesen: Ken Smith hat den RELEN_8 tag erzeugt.
Gut zu wissen, bevor ich heute Nacht mit dem “.” ein “make world” auf FreeBSD 8 Beta 3 angeworfen haetten.

UNIXforen.de ist eroeffnet FreeBSD, Linktipps, Linux, OpenBSD

Bereits am 25. Januar 2008 hatte ich, eher aus uebermit, mir die Domaine www.unixforen.de registriert.
Seitdem ueberlege ich hin und her, ob, und wenn ja, was ich mit der Seite machen soll.
Vor einiger Zeit habe ich mich dann doch entschlossen, ein Forenprojekt mit der Seite aufzubauen, und vBulletin draufgezogen.
Bzgl dem Inhalt habe ich mit vielen Leuten gesprochen, und mir Anregungen geholt. Nun denke ich, dass das Project so weit ist, es einfach mal auf die oeffentlichkeit loszulassen. Ob die Leute es annehmen werden, wird die Zeit zeigen. Auf jeden Fall viel Spass auf UNIXforen.de

FreeBSD 8.0: Codefreeze und BETA1 FreeBSD

Ok, der Codefreeze ist wohl nicht mehr ganz so neu. Bereits am 26.06.2009 ging FreeBSD 8-CURRENT in den Codefreeze. Fuer den einen oder anderen kam der Codefreeze doch recht frueh.
Und die Jungs haben ganze Arbeit geleistet, den diesen Dienstag hat das FreeBSD Realease-Engine-Team die erste BETA-Version fuer FreeBSD 8 freigegeben. Geplant sind mindestens 3 BETA-Versionen. Anschliessend werden zudem noch mindestens zwei Release Candidates folgen.
Neu ist, dass es zum ersten Mal ein Image fuer einen USB-Stick gibt. Der neue USB-Stack macht dies zuverlaessig moeglich. Zum derzeitigen Zeitpunkt gibt es leider noch keine Unterstuetzung durch freebsd-update(8), es wird jedoch daran gearbeitet.
Die wichtigsten aenderungen und Neuerungen von FreeBSD 8.0 sind:
- Neuer TTY-Layer ohne GIANT-Lock
- Neuer, deutlich zuverlaessigerer USB-Stack, der sich auch vor Linux und OS X nicht verstecken muss. Anders als diese Systeme hat er zudem eingebautes Quirkmanagement, wodurch Nutzer ohne Codeeingriffe defekte Hardware ansprechen koennen.
- Grundueberarbeitetes VFS, was diverse IO-Engpaesse beseitigen soll
- Eine Unmenge Arbeiten am Netzwerkstack, die nicht nur die Referenzimplementierung mehrerer neuer RFC darstellen, sondern FreeBSD auch 10 GBit/s Verbindungen ausnutzen lassen.
- ULE3-Scheduler mit Topologie-Beachtung (wie die CPUs und RAM zueinander stehen) und IRQ-Routing.
- ZFSv13
- VImage, also virtualisierte Netzwerkstacks, welche mit jails kombiniert werden koennen.
- Hierarchische Jails, also Jails in Jails in Jails…
- Ueberarbeitetes Soundsystem mit noch besserer Klangqualitaet und einigen interessanten, neuen Funktionen.
- NFS4 als Client und Server
- NFS4-ACL als Ergaenzung zu den bekannten POSIX-ACL
- Noch einmal drastisch verbessertes SMP, FreeBSD skaliert nun bis mindestens
32 Kerne linear. Damit gehoert FreeBSD neben Solaris weiterhin zur Weltspitze.
- Tausende kleinere aenderungen wie Bugfixes, neue Treiber, neue Optionen, etc.

RELEASE:August 31, 2009People with the resources to do so (test machines…) are encouraged to
give 8.0-BETA1 a try. At this point it is not quite ready for
production systems but mostly because there is still some ongoing work
in a few areas that may cause some changes in things like ABI/API.
Debugging support (WITNESS, malloc debugging, etc.) are also still
turned on and those tend to cause a performance hit. As far as we know
there are no known issues that would cause data corruption or anything
like that, just the issues with performance and potential for changes
caused by ongoing work. If you find problems they can be reported
through the normal Gnats based PR system or posted to the mailing lists.Note that for BETA1 no packages were included with any of the images.
The amd64 and i386 architectures include a file named:
8.0-BETA1-<arch>-memstick.img
If you copy that to a USB memory stick newer machines should be able to
boot from it and use it to install from. Note that you need to
overwrite the contents of the memory stick completely, not copy it into
an existing filesystem on the memory stick. Exactly how you do that
depends on your machine but just to give you an example this works on
the machine I tested it with:dd if=8.0-BETA1-amd64-memstick.img of=/dev/da0 bs=10240 conv=sync
Be careful if you have SCSI drives, more USB disks than just the memory
stick, etc – make sure /dev/da0 (or whatever you use) is the memory
stick. Using this image for livefs based rescue mode is known to not
work, that is one of the things still being worked on.FreeBSD Update was not ready for updates to 8.0 at the point this
message was sent but it is also being worked on. A separate message
will be posted when it’s ready.

FreeBSD: miwi ist jetzt Portmgr FreeBSD

In nur 3 Jahren hat miwi alles erreicht, was es zu erreichen gibt.
Gestern wurde sowohl miwi als auch Ion-Mihai Tetcu in das Portmr-Team berufen:
Portmgr is happy to announce that two new members will join the team. Martin Wilke has been one of our active committers since receiving his commit bit today 3 years ago. He has been working in a number of subgroups including python, ports-security and the KDE team. Ion-Mihai Tetcu has been interested in regression testing and qualitiy assurance, creeating QAT automated tinderbox testing of all port commits on a per-commit basis, and adding on-the-fly feedback to the snapshot builds from the pointyhat package cluster. Unfortunately, we will also be saying goodbye to Kririll Ponomarew, who hasn't had much time to spend on FreeBSD and will be stepping down from portmgr. We thank Kirill for all his contributions in the past and wish Martin and Ion-Mihai the best of luck with the new tasks bestowed upon them. VirtualBox: Call for Testing FreeBSD

Erst vor einigen Tagen wurden die ersten Screenshots fuer VirtualBox auf FreeBSD praesentiert, nun stehen die ersten Versionen zum Testen bereit.

After the announcement from Alexander Eichner about
Virtualbox on FreeBSD, we started the work on a port
for FreeBSD. Now we think that we solved the most
problems and are ready for the first Call for Testing.Some notes before you can test the port:
Make sure you are using RELENG_7 or higher. You have
to use a fresh portstree with uptodate ports!! Please
read carefully the pkg-messages.Some known issues / Troubleshooting:
Sometimes the kernel on HEAD coredumps when loading
or unloading the kernel module. A small workaround
to prevent the crash is to not start X, mount proc,
then load the kernel module and start X from the
console. That helped me and some testers, maybe you
too.AMD64 should be work in general, it builds
and start. But not right tested at the moment. We
want here also some feedback.Some Thanks:
